How’s NaNoWriMo 2016 going so far? Well, I’m technically behind, though not by much.
Turns out that throwing yourself into writing a story is harder when you’ve only had a day to recover from eight-hour time difference jet-lag. I was knackered on 1st November – not to mention I had other things to catch up on – and only managed 521 words. The following day, I was back at work and once again too tired to do much in the evening: that day’s total was 583 words.
I have, however, not fallen below the recommended daily quota of 1,667 words since then; I even managed 2,722 on Saturday. As of this evening, I’m at a total of 12,566, only 767 words below where I should be on Day 8. Hopefully I’ll be fully on track soon.
As for the writing itself, it hasn’t been completely smooth. I had wanted to spend much of my first act detailing what my main character had been doing between the events of her last story and the main events of this one, but that ended up feeling quite stale. I’ve ended up skipping ahead to when the main mystery begins; I can always go back and fill in some gaps later if I’m struggling to keep the words coming one day. Well, NaNoWriMo is a great place for experimentation, to learn what works or doesn’t work in a story.
Are you doing NaNoWriMo? How is your project coming along? Feel free to comment.
I’m doing well enough so far. I’ve completed chapter 12 of 32 and hit over 20,000 words. I’m looking ahead and the next chapter or two I may have to rework some to give it a little more action. I don’t want to get boggled down in exposition or just talking for talking sake. I imagine I’ll well go over 50K words, I may cut a chapter. Who knows.
