With the end of October approaching, I’m once again looking ahead – not to Halloween or Bonfire Night, both of which I’d rather avoid, but to the National Novel Writing Month challenge. This year being my eleventh NaNoWriMo, it’s become part of the annual routine, as much as deciding on suitable Christmas and birthday presents for the family.
A few months ago, I was feeling full of ideas, most of them continuations of previous works which will probably be used for future NaNoWriMos or Camp NaNoWriMos. The one I decided on was a historical novel set in ancient Rome, specifically during Caesar’s Civil War, a time with plenty of background conflict to feed the story. Since the story is about both love and war, I’ve given it the title Venus and Mars, and I’ve got a reasonable amount of research notes to draw upon.
At this very moment, however, I’m not feeling especially enthusiastic about Venus and Mars. This may just be because I’m distracted by other issues in my life, or because I’ve spent the past month devoting more time to a re-write and edit of a previous story and I don’t want to set that aside for the entirety of November. My feelings may change by the first of November, but right now, I expect that I’ll be going back and forth between the two projects, perhaps even trying something completely different if the Roman story isn’t quite interesting enough. As long as I produce 50,000 fresh words of fiction, it qualifies.
